How Media Lies to You
Here are two recent media articles ostensibly on the same subject but offering quite different focuses. Readers of each article will likely get completely different impressions of what is going on.
The first story is from a western media outlet and the second is from RT News America, a global news outlet known for its critiques of western media shortcomings. We can’t say which article is correct, if either of them are.
The article contents are in black, my comments in red.
The following headline and the abridged article recently appeared in the New Zealand Herald, our national newspaper which is closely associated with the western mainstream media,
“Covid-19: Wuhan scientists planned to release coronaviruses into cave bats 18 months before outbreak”
22 Sep, 2021 12:00 PM
Article headline immediately focuses on and associates “Wuhan Scientists” and “Covid 19.”
Studies show up to 70% of people read no further than the headline and their takeaway message of the article occurs within these few seconds. Just in case you are someone who reads the first few lines as well as the headline, the reference between “Coronaviruses” and “Wuhan scientists” is repeated.
Wuhan scientists were planning to release enhanced airborne coronaviruses into Chinese bat populations to inoculate them against diseases that could jump to humans, leaked grant proposals dating from 2018 show.
New documents reportedly show that just 18 months before the first Covid-19 cases appeared, researchers had submitted plans to release skin-penetrating nanoparticles containing “novel chimeric spike proteins” of bat coronaviruses into cave bats in Yunnan, China, according to UK newspaper The Telegraph.
They also planned to create chimeric viruses, genetically enhanced to infect humans more easily, and requested US$14 million from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to fund the work.
“They” – the Wuhan scientists who are the main focuses of the article – planned to create highly dangerous chimeric (man made) viruses and requested financial assisitance from “DARPA” to do so.
The article makes no mention of who or what Darpa is, which would lead most people to conclude Darpa is a Chinese organization, as this is consistent with the context of the article, but this is not correct. Darpa is an American military research agency, a part of the United States Department of “Defense” (Pentagon). It is responsible for the development of emerging technologies for possible use as weapons by the American military, viruses included.
The proposal also included plans to mix high-risk natural coronavirus strains with more infectious but less dangerous varieties.
The bid was submitted by British zoologist Peter Daszak of EcoHealth Alliance, the US-based organisation, which has worked closely with the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) researching bat coronaviruses.
Darpa refused to fund the work, saying: “It is clear that the proposed project led by Peter Daszak could have put local communities at risk”, and warned that the team had not properly considered the dangers of enhancing the virus (gain of function research) or releasing a vaccine by air.
Peter Daszak was also behind a letter published in The Lancet last year which effectively shut down scientific debate into the origins of Covid-19.
Viscount Ridley, who has co-authored a book on the origin of Covid-19, due for release in November, and who has frequently called for a further investigation into what caused the pandemic in the House of Lords, said:
“For more than a year, I tried repeatedly to ask questions of Peter Daszak with no response. Now it turns out he had authored this vital piece of information about virus work in Wuhan but refused to share it with the world. I am furious. So should the world be.”
“Peter Daszak and the EcoHealth Alliance (EHA) proposed injecting deadly chimeric (man made) bat coronaviruses collected by the Wuhan Institute of Virology into humanised and ‘batified’ mice, and much, much more.”
THIS SECOND ARTICLE FROM RT AMERICA IS REPORTING ON THE SAME SUBJECT, BUT PRESENTS A DIFFERENT FOCUS ENTIRELY…
“Leaked docs show DARPA considered funding $14mn project to infect Chinese bats with altered coronaviruses in 2018”
22 Sep, 2021 16:25
Documents published by a scientist group probing Covid-19’s origins reveal that controversial US non-profit organization EcoHealth Alliance had sought $14 million in 2018 for a project that would expose Chinese bats to altered coronaviruses.
This article immediately focuses on the western “EcoHealth Alliance”, an allegedly controversial organization, and not on “Wuhan scientists.”
Some 18 months before the first Covid cases appeared, the three-and-a-half year study had planned to release skin-penetrating particles containing “novel chimeric spike proteins” from bat coronaviruses into bat caves in China’s Yunnan province. The goal was to study and prevent transmission to humans.
Now we hear the 3.5 year study – still not associated with Wuhan scientists – was to help prevent virus transmission to humans, a surely noble goal.
The proposal, titled ‘Project Defuse’, was submitted by EcoHealth Alliance for funding consideration as part of an initiative aimed at preventing emerging pathogen threats by the US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). It was ultimately rejected over safety concerns.
This article clearly describes Darpa as an American military research organization.
EcoHealth President Peter Daszak, a British zoologist, is listed as the person in charge of Project Defuse, which would have been a collaborative effort with the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) and a number of US universities, along with the US Geological Survey National Wildlife Health Center and the Palo Alto Research Center.
The article shows the project leader is British scientist Peter Dasuk with several American research organizations being listed as collaborators.
Earlier this month, investigative news outlet The Intercept revealed that federal agencies, including the US National Institutes of Health, granted EcoHealth Alliance a total of $3.1 million – with nearly $600,000 used in part to “identify and alter bat coronaviruses likely to infect humans” at the WIV.
They indicate that researchers were looking to tailor bat coronaviruses to target “human-specific cleavage sites”. This would make it easier for the virus to get into human cells.
Here a connection is listed between US research organizations and coronavirus research. Specifically, work included modifying coronaviruses in order to increase human infectiousness.
In a statement, DRASTIC said the proposal’s “discussion of the planned introduction of human-specific cleavage sites” indicated that a closer review by the “wider scientific community of the plausibility of artificial insertion is warranted.”
Although DARPA’s ‘Biological Technologies Office’ rejected the project since it would “potentially involve ‘Gain of Function’ research” without assessing the risks of such, it left the door open for future funding since there were “several components of great interest” in the proposal.
This paragraph is more ambiguous – stating that Darpa rejected funding on this particular occasion, but also making it clear that they were still interested in some aspects of the project.
In response to a verification request from a news outlet, DARPA stated that it has “never funded directly, nor indirectly as a subcontractor, any activity or researcher associated with the EcoHealth Alliance or WIV.”
The documents do not present any conclusive evidence to support the disputed theory that Covid-19 was leaked from a Chinese lab, but they further highlight the fact that US agencies had expressed interest in risky research into bat coronaviruses in the years leading up the pandemic.
This paragraph is self explantory. It highlights an aspect of the whole story that is not commonly mentioned in the western media. Also not made clear by either article – perhaps because no-one really knows exactly what went on between American and Chinese authorities and organizations – is who it was who actually initiated and lead this “gain of function” research on coronaviruses in Wuhan.
Was this an American military initiative or did the Chinese government play a part ? Was it a joint venture? Was it for civilian or military use? Was the Wuhan lab used simply as a specialist facility for doing the donkey work or did they contribute to the direction of the research program itself?
The lab in Wuhan was only commissioned in 2018, a year before the similar Fort Detrick military bio-research lab in America was shut down over safety concerns. Are these two events linked? Like all major global stories – invasions, assassinations, terroriat attacks, regime changes etc – the truth of the matter takes years and decades to emerge.
No doubt the truth about the Covid 19 global pandemic will emerge at a similarly glacial pace. Read internationally to get a better view on this and every subject. Check in with small citizen journalists who now are the best source of information in many cases.
The mainstream media we thought we had, died long ago. You must remember that.
Hong Kong & Shanghai – The “Exotic” Cities.
One of the more delightful and disturbing things I have learned in recent years is how the use of pleasant sounding words of the english language mask often hideous and immoral acts. We have all gotten used to it really, as this has been happening for centuries.
In times past, the British Empire would report back on their “Expeditions” abroad. Of course, expeditions were often more like “unprovoked and violent military invasions of small and unweary nations”, but that is too big a mouthful to say and it is a bit too harsh sounding. “Expeditions” are much nicer sounding right?
Like the 1903 British expedition to Tibet.
In modern times America uses one its “nice” phrases quite alot in public – “routine patrol.” Once again, this sounds fairly harmless right? Almost routine, unsurprisingly.
President Ronald Reagan used this phrase when communicating to the world as he attempted to explain how and why the American military shot down an Iranian civilian airliner full of people in 1988.
Almost nothing in the details of Reagan’s global press conference was true. And rather than admitting that the American warship was operating illegally within Iranian waters during the period of the 8 years long Iraqi invasion of Iran, a war supported by America and the west, Reagan simply spat out the phrase, “whilst on routine patrol.…”
“Routine Patrols” are very commonplace. It bascially means, “operating anywhere, anytime, doing anything.” Legally or not. Much less controversial than “illegal activities in other nations exclusive maritime zones.”
Another great euphemism is that which was applied by westerners to old Hong Kong and Shanghai after the defeat of China in the Opium War.
After China was defeated, Hong Kong was taken at gunpoint by western powers in order to profit from the misery of their newly created drug addicts in China. The forced western sales of drugs into China exploded and this made the “westernized” Hong Kong one of the most corrupt places on earth. It was soon riddled with drugs, criminal gangs, spies, prostitution and vice. Shanghai shared a similar fate.
And all of these appalling things – imposed on China by the West – were hidden and excused under the guise that Hong Kong and Shanghai, were simply “exotic”. They were places rich people went to enjoy women, drugs and other pleasures not so easily available in the prudish and respectible western nations that had created them.
In fact, so much money was made from these “exotic” attractions and their activities of vice, that a new bank was required to finance the now very lucrative western drug dealing industry in China. No respectible bank wanted to be associated with the profits from such “exotic” activites in China and so a new bank was created, named after the locations where such illicit activites went on – The Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation or HSBC.
This new bank – handling much of the international drug trades finances – opened in the two most “exotic” Chinese cities in 1865 and today is one of the biggest banks in the world.
I wonder how many people know the original business model of HSBC? Or know where today’s utterly terrible and violent international drug trade actually started and which western nations started it? What did this drug trade do to human rights?
It makes the western moral pronouncements and blatant interference in the internal affairs of China in recent years quite sickening when the full context of these same nations previous activities in China are known. It seems that blatant interference in the affairs of other nations is just in the DNA of some western nations. It seems like an entitlement. That they see themselves as superior and it is therefore justified to interfere.
When British and American governments talk of the necessity of China to their improve human rights one only needs to think back to the history of Hong Kong in order to dismiss these nations’ sickening moralizing and hypocrisy.
But western propaganda is really too powerful to see through in many global issues today. Like “John from Dorset” in a previous post, most westerners now know something is wrong with their societies, but they just can’t see or connect the dots. Sadly, many people don’t even see the dots, let alone realize that they still need to be connected. So in this confusion, it is easy for western governments to deflect the frustration of their citizens away from their leaders and project their anger onto unrelated parties, like China for example. There must always be someone to blame right?
Euphemisms like “expeditions”, “routine patrols” and “exotic” are all dots in the picture of today’s reality. There are thousands more dots. We have to work hard at seeing these dots and the picture they create once they are connected.
Help others see the dots by sharing non-mainstream media information. There are some excellent citizen media outlets on my twitter and facebook pages. Have a look at them and judge for yourself. Become a snow flake at the start of an avalanche.
One person really can make a difference.
The Epoch Times, Falun Gong & The Anti-Beijing Campaign
I was recently walking into the city here in Auckland and came across these determined elderley people in the rain.
You can see what they are promoting – the practice of Falun Gong, The Epoch Times media group and an “End The CCP” (Chinese Communist Party) campaign. You will see the same type of people doing the same type of thing in many parts of the world. I have seen it in Korea and Australia as well. I’m sure much the same thing appears in many western cities these days.
Good on them I suppose. At least they are taking part in the promotion of their views in society. Most people never actively engage in such a way. We don’t have to agree with them and I don’t.
On the days when I pass by these people, I don’t find anyone who speaks english and as I don’t know Mandarin at all, I’m unable to discuss and share views with them. I would genuinely like to ask why they promote such views and whether they have any respect for the positive achievements of the chinese communist party in raising the standard of living for 700 million chinese people, thereby improving global human rights in the single biggest campaign ever.
Behind this anti-communist party campaign are the seemingly harmless promoters of “Falun Gong” (the elderley people you see in the rain above) and “The Epoch Times” media organization, the free newspapers you see in supermarkets, all over Facebook & Youtube and in many other public places.
Falun Gong’s prime motive is to expose what they consider the “evil” of the Chinese government and “save all sentient beings” in a forthcoming divine battle against communism, destroying the Chinese government in the process. The vast Epoch Times media group is one of their main outlets for such views.
The head of the Falun Gong movement – which the Chinese government, hardly surprisingly, considers a cult – is Li Hongzhi, who created it in 1992. Their global headquarters today is a 400 acre compound in New York state, USA.
Li has railed against what he called the wickedness of popular music, homosexuality and feminism while pronouncing that he is a god-like figure who can levitate and walk through walls.
Li has also taught that sickness is a symptom of evil that can only be truly cured with meditation and devotion, and that aliens from undiscovered dimensions have invaded the minds and bodies of humans, bringing corruption and inventions such as computers and airplanes.
It’s that motivation against a variety of modern technologies and its skepticism against rational thought that helped drive the organization towards Donald Trump in his 2016 campaign for the US Presidency. That move was both lucrative and beneficial for its anti-Chinese government message.
Former practitioners of Falun Gong have said that the world is headed toward a judgment day, where those labeled “Communists” will be sent to some kind of hell, and those sympathetic to Falun Gong will be spared. Donald Trump is viewed by their supporters as a key ally in the anti-communist fight.
“It is so rabidly pro-Trump,” commented a former practitioner, referring to The Epoch Times. Devout practitioners of Falun Gong “believe that Trump was sent by heaven to destroy the Chinese Communist Party.”
Falun Gong’s spectacular growth in western consciousness, via its network of media sites, Facebook and YouTube channels has made it a powerful conduit for the internet’s conspiracy theories, including anti-vaccination propaganda and QAnon, to reach the mainstream.
Through its reclusive spiritual leader, its political vitriol, online conspiracy theories and the rise of Donald Trump and his very public trade “war” on China, Falun Gong and the Epoch Times have become a digital media powerhouse that now attracts billions of views each month.
In 2005, The Epoch Times released the ”Nine Commentaries,” a series of anonymous editorials that it claimed exposed the Chinese Communist Party’s “massive crimes” and “attempts to eradicate all traditional morality and religious belief.” (nothing over the top there right?)
In an April 2017 email to the staff obtained by The New York Times, The Epoch Times leadership envisioned that its Facebook strategy could help turn the media organization into “the world’s largest and most authoritative media.”
Today, The Epoch Times and its affiliates are a major force in far right-wing global media, with tens of millions of social media followers spread across dozens of pages and an online audience that rivals those of The Daily Caller and Breitbart News. But they still make time for the old school media around the world as well. I see these same free newspapers in my local supermarket.
Who knows what the real motivation is for the Falun Gong movement. Perhaps there is some underlying beneficial spiritual belief there. More likely, it is a purely financial initiative. After all, any spritual “leader” who can call the US President a key ally in his crusade and can help convince the Whitehouse occupant to launch a trade war against his enemy, is going to milk that connection for all it is worth right? And it will be worth millions, if not billions.
It wouldn’t surprise me if many of the adherents of Falun Gong are good people who are simply being used by western and chinese ex-pat elites for their own political purposes in a long multi-faceted war against China.
But whatever lies behind such movements, in my view, the dangers of their movement far outweigh anything positive in their message.
Falun Gong and The Epoch Times are too closely aligned with those western religious extremists and evangelicals who inhabit a variety of public positions and who populate much of the world’s leadership unfortunately.
Whether you are talking about the likes of the Pompeo’s or the Pence’s or the Bushes, Al-quada or ISIS, Falun Gong or the most fervent promoters of Mao or Stalin….they are all in what most people would call the “extremist” camp. These figures may be of dissimilar appearance but the dangers they pose are quite similar.
The answers to life’s most perplexing questions and issues are rarely found in extreme views in any direction. Extremists promise results and may even deliver sometimes for a short while, but cults and extremists are not long term tonics for life’s ills.
We should stay clear of them all. Only hard work and diligence create true wealth. Not demagogues.
Extremists are easy to spot when they carry knives and machine guns. But some extremists and their motivations are more difficult to spot.
Sometimes they look like harmless old people quietly exercising in the rain.
Lies About The Uyghurs Are So Blatant!
US Government puts out totally contradicting statements about Uigher terrorism. It’s obvious who is lying.
So here is one of the stalwarts of the Wall St media, the very aptly named Wall St Journal proclaiming that China is needlessly irate after Washington removes the Uigher based East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM) from its global terrorist organization data base in November 2020.
Just in case you are one of the 60-80% of people who only read the headlines and then form an opinion around only that, the East Turkistan Islamic Movement – ETIM – is a terrorist organization according to some parts of the US government, the European Union and the United Nations. It fights alongside ISIS and al-Quada in various wars around the world. It is dominated by Uighurs.
With a barely concealed eye roll this Wall St Journal article is implying that the removal of the ETIM from the USA terrorist database is just China making a big fuss about nothing….in order to justify Beijing’s crackdowns in Xinjiang. There’s no real threat. It is all just an excuse and Chinese propaganda.
To reinforce this idea, the WSJ headline refers to the opinions of scholars. These scholars are no doubt very bright people who are supposedly neutral, book worm types – and are much too stiff and innocent to tell lies so you’d better believe them when they say, “The ETIM is Defunct.”
Why is it such a big deal for the US government to de-list a terrorist organization like the ETIM?
Because the United States can, and do make it very difficult for organizations or even whole nations to function normally if they choose to.
Groups such as the ETIM and ISIS who are on international terror lists are subject to a wide range of international controls and restrictions which inhibit their ability to function.
But even innocent nations can be strangled almost to death by application of these same restrictions. Ask Cuba, Iran or Venezeula about the American power to make life very difficult for no reason at all.
Extremist organizations on international terror lists have financial, diplomatic and travel restrictions placed upon them which inhibits their ability to raise money or buy weapons. Its members are restricted from easily moving about the world for terrorist training and it places restrictions on any “respectible” bank, organization or nation from having anything to do with them. Of course, there are probably ways around all of these things, but with these international restrictions in place, it is much harder for terrorist groups to function.
So in removing the East Turkistan Islamic Movement from these restrictions, the ETIM has a much easier job buying weapons, getting training and moving about the globe in order to conduct terror. America, by removing the ETIM from their terror list under Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, was now saying essentially that the ETIM are great people and they are free to do what they like.
From the WSJ article,
“Secretary of State Mike Pompeo ordered the delisting of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, a group that once advocated for an independent state in China’s Xinjiang region, on Oct. 20, 2020 according to the latest issue of the Federal Register, published Thursday.
An American State Department official said Friday that the delisting occurred “because, for more than a decade, there has been no credible evidence that ETIM continues to exist.”
So, that last sentence from the American government in November 2020 – that for more than a decade, there is no credible evidence that the ETIM has existed – supports what the “scholars” are saying too, according to the headline. That the ETIM has not existed from at least as far back as 2010.
Is that assertion correct?
No. It is not.
The assertion of Mr Pompeo that the ETIM has not existed for well over a decade does not match with what other sections of the American government have been saying about the exact same terror group. More importantly, Mr Pompeo’s assertion does not match what others in his government have been doing with the ETIM, as recently as 2018.
Here is a tweet from the excellent Daniel Dumbrill, a westerner living in China, who often finds little gems like this one and shares them.Check him out to get great first hand experiences of his life in China.
The tweet shows US Major General Hecker speaking in a press conference in 2018 about the “very real and very active Uyghur terrorist organization, the East Turkistan Islamic Movement” – ETIM – and how the US government has been dealing with the ETIM, as well as many other types of people, ie: it drops shit loads of bombs on them, like it is their hobby to do.https://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?creatorScreenName=Richard87404469&dnt=true&embedId=twitter-widget-0&features=eyJ0ZndfZXhwZXJpbWVudHNfY29va2llX2V4cGlyYXRpb24iOnsiYnVja2V0IjoxMjA5NjAwLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X2hvcml6b25fdHdlZXRfZW1iZWRfOTU1NSI6eyJidWNrZXQiOiJodGUiLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X3NwYWNlX2NhcmQiOnsiYnVja2V0Ijoib2ZmIiwidmVyc2lvbiI6bnVsbH19&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1291273852387901440&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fpumpkinpiefailures.com%2F2021%2F09%2F15%2Flies-about-the-uyghurs-are-so-blatant%2F&sessionId=facc20a8014dd4dc66f75df690c2b0dc869949e2&siteScreenName=Richard87404469&theme=light&widgetsVersion=1890d59c%3A1627936082797&width=550px
Clearly, Major General Hecker is either confused or lying about the US Army dropping lots of bombs on the ETIM in 2018. Because, according to the Wall St Journal, Mr Pompeo’s State Department and some “Scholars,” the ETIM was long gone by 2010.
So who was General Hecker bombing? Phantoms? Civilians? Most likely it really was the very active ETIM Uigher terror group.
Is it that Mr Mike Pompeo and his State Department were knowingly lying when they delisted the ETIM from the global terrorist database? Most likely.
Mr Pompeo has been seen on video joking about how much he has lied in his career as Head of the CIA, so it seems quite likely that he is at it again in October 2020, delisting a known and active terrorist organization that his government’s military was still actively fighting against at the exact same time.
Is that treason?
It is Mr Pompeo showing active and highly public financial and diplomatic support for a known terrorist organization isn’t it?
Which means Mr Pompeo holds human life in very low regard. As well as his own country, its people and its government. Which seems strange (or possibly fitting) for someone who holds such extreme religious views as he professes to. Perhaps he only holds human lives sacred if they think like he does.
The most likely ulterior motive of Mr Pompeo given these facts – and especially as he delisted the ETIM near the very end of his time in office – was to use the ETIM terrorists to unleash further bloodshed against innocent people in Xinjiang and perhaps China as a whole. To destabilize China and cause as much havoc as possible. Because much can be accomplished by meddling outsiders during times of chaos.
China knows this. Foreigners have a long history of causing chaos in China. Read about posts here about the Opium War and China’s Century of Humiliation.
I am sure that China will handle these latest attempts at foreign meddling in Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Taiwan appropriately. Their culture has been around for over 5000 years after all.
People Live in Cages in Hong Kong – Literally!
Hong Kong has always promoted itself to the world as a glittering, law abiding, “all business” and civilized city. Westernized. A bit British. And that must be good right?
The city might have been like that once but it didn’t seem this way to me when I visited in 2017. I found Hong Kong to be a bit claustrophobic and not as “exotic” as its public image suggests. Too many tall buildings and much of the sun blocked out as a result. Not many green spaces.
What I felt there in 2017 is now widely reported these days. It’s now clear that the city has been in decay for decades. Too many people, rising inequality. Poor spending on infrastructure and social development, declining air quality and a lack of green spaces.
And one of the worst aspects of life for many people in Hong Kong is housing.
Housing in Hong Kong is unaffordable and often inhumane. It surely would have been one of drivers of the frustrations released by the peaceful demonstrations of large numbers of Hong Kongers in recent years.
One of the things that Hong Kong is short of is land. As a result, residential accomodation has been built upwards and in very high density. You can see rather eye-catching (and not necessarily pleasant) photographic essays on many of these rather unfortunate Hong Kong “nano apartment” towers on the net.
Here is a bird’s eye view of an interior. What would this size apartment be? 10 sqm at most? That is definitely nano and it includes everything.
One of the smallest living spaces in Hong Kong, even smaller than the nanos are called “coffin” apartments – for obvious reasons. Here is one below – complete with toilet, laundry and cooking areas. It’s quite hard to imagine anyone living like this. Let alone in one of the richest regions of the world. Maybe there is something wrong with how we measure and/or apportion wealth? Probably the occupants of this home are the workers who actually build the glass towers of the rich city siders.
But wait. There is even worse.
Just when you thought the living conditions couldn’t get any worse in Hong Kong, there are “cage homes.” And yes, they are what they sound like. Often the living arrangements of the poor or elderley, cage homes are bed sized cages, stacked upon one another, in large shared dormitary style rooms.
What does this say about the society that tolerates this? Especially as Hong Kong is such a high finance hub for asia, home to all the elite financial organizations of the world. This abundance of wealth, coupled with its abundance of poverty makes Hong Kong the most unequal place on earth. This didn’t happen overnight. Or even since the 1997 returning of the region to China.
The outcomes and decline of modern Hong Kong must surely have been created by its historical and societal goals and norms, which, as we know, were under the guideance of London for 155 of its 179 year life time.
Few (any?) people in mainland China’s other top tier cities live like this now. Take a look at Hong Kong’s neighbouring mainland city of Shenzhen.
Shenzhen and Hong Kong are very near to each other geographically. But to me, they are very far apart.
Which city looks to you as being a part of the future? Which city looks to be a remnant of the past?
I want to visit Shenzhen one day amongst many other places of interest in China. For all of the faults of the Chinese government it seems to me to that they are transforming the lives of ordinary people in a way that has not been possible under the alternative systems in the world, such as that under which Hong Kong has spent most of its life.
I guess it is up to a population of a nation and its governors to strike a balance which satisfies everyone. Balance between progress and red tape. Between freedom and inequality.
It will be fascinating to watch China’s continuing journey. And hopefully, they will be left alone to travel along it. Free from foreign meddling.
There Are No Permanent Enemies, Only Permanent “Interests.”
It is an old saying that we have seen proof of many times around the world in recent years. “Friends and Enemies come and go but “Interests” are eternal”.
This mean that nothing and nobody is fixed, there are even no “special” relationships.
But you might not know this – that we are all simply looking out for ourselves.
Take Syrian leader Dr Bashar al-Assad, seen above. After being educated in Syrian medical universities, he attended post graduate studies in London at the NHS Western Eye Hospital, specializing in Opthalmology. Later (President) Dr Assad was warmly welcomed into western power centres into the twenty first century.
President Assad’s warm welcomes to London are hardly surprising. Assad was providing an outsourced torture service for Washington and the CIA at the time of his visit to Britain in 2002, so any friend of the CIA would of course, be welcomed in London.https://www.denverpost.com/2014/01/23/us-cia-once-found-syrian-torture-useful/embed/#?secret=0fPO76isez
As is common, official statements by western governments on almost any subject are false, hypocritical and lacking in clarity. Whilst the Obama administration condemned the human rights abuses by such nations as President Assad’s Syria (and President Gadaffi’s Libya), they made no mention of Washington’s previous use of his services in the exact same field of abuse.
It was also convienient to forget President Assad’s father, former President Hafez Assad welcoming US President Richard Nixon to Syria in 1974 as well as all the other occasions when American presidents (Carter, Bush Snr) had met with the Syrian dictator.
This is what Hillary Clinton was talking about when she was speaking to some investment bankers during the 2016 election campaign in one of her highly priced, but less highly prized, speechs. That is, government officials have a two track communication system – one message is for public consumption – which is often meaningless – whilst another, much more important message is created for private communications. Often the two messages contain very different information, and are quite dissimilar in tone, as we clearly see today with regards western government public pronouncements on the Syrian government. The same Syrian government they once welcomed, perhaps even still do, in private. Who really knows?
Another glaring example of the “no permanent friends” philosophy is Saddam Hussein of Iraq and former American Defence Seretary Donald Rumsfeld.
You would never know it, listening to all the “shock and awe” talk of destruction by Secretary Rumsfeld in 2003, but Mr Rumsfeld and Saddam Hussein had met before. Quite personally and warmly in fact. Twenty years earlier in 1983, then former (and still yet to be again) Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was the Special Envoy of President Ronald Reagan to Iraq.
Who knows what they talked about – probably just stuff to do with American help to Iraq during Iraq’s unprovoked war against Iran, that still had 5 years to run at the time. You know the stuff, “how are your WMD’s holding out Mr President?“; “Do you need any more weapons Mr President?”; “Cash?” ; “Just let us know Mr President – we deliver for no extra cost….”
Eventually Saddam Hussein – like most Dictator friends of the west – outlived his usefulness. Dictators like Saddam Hussein, after being so powerful for so long, start to get the funny idea that they actually are in charge of something. Even a nation.
And when foreign leaders start to make independent decisions that don’t go down well in Washington, well….we know what happens next don’t we?
When Saddam Hussein started requesting annoying little things like wanting to be paid for his oil with Euros instead of US dollars, that was the beginning of the end for him.
No gold watch. No “I (almost) defeated Iran” badge. It is regime change time!
This scenario has played out numerous time in my lifetime. In the Middle East, Central and South America, even for God’s sake, in the highly trusted western ally, and near neighbour of New Zealand – Australia!
(see a previous post about the 1975 CIA/MI6 deposing the Australian Prime minister Gough Whitlam)
And now we see the latest installment playing out in the world. Except this time, the target is quite big and a bit stubborn. Well, the current target nation has been around for over 5000 years. They’ve been attacked and invaded by their neighbours quite a few times (and by far distant British empires too) and yet they have overcome all their setbacks – both natural and man made – and they continue to flourish. So China knows a thing or two about surviving.
President Xi Jingping was given the royal and red carpet treatment during his state visit to Britain in 2015. The visit was seen as a bit humiliating for Britain in some quarters actually, as the Brits were practically grovelling for China’s attention and investment in their nation. The visit all went fabulously well. Laughing selfies with the PM, followed by casual trips to english pubs for a beer, pics with Wills and Kate, trips down The Mall in gold state coaches flanked by thousands of Chinese flags, etc….it was all so wonderful.
But again, it couldn’t last.
Who knows the exact circumstances why things turned to custard. There are many possibilites – we won’t explore those here. All we know now, is that China has gone from great friend to an evil foe in just a few short years. No more beers and selfies lads…
Nothing China does now is good or positive – even though everything it does is exactly the same as it has always done when fetted in London.
Hopefully, it will not end in a real hot war. It shouldn’t. The United States rarely attacks nations that have an ability to defend themselves.
But we must learn to see through all the media lies that get generated day after day, about China, Russia, Iran, Panama, Venezeula or any other nation or subject that displeases Washington. After all, these nations were once our friends. Why can’t they be again?
If you knew of someone who was always falling out with their friends, often violently so, wouldn’t you wonder why that is? Would you be their friend?
You’d have to wonder at least.
Why Is China Treated Differently in the Western Media?
Human rights abuses have been an ongoing issue for the government of this asian giant. The abuses range from mass killings, enforced disappearances, torture, rape and sexual abuse to political repression. The Army, the Police Force and Border Security Personnel have all been accused of committing severe human rights abuses against local civilians.
Human rights groups say more than 100,000 people have died since 1989 and even the official government figures give the number of civilians killed as above 50,000.
Rape was regularly used as a means to punish and humiliate communities.
A US State department report from 2010 concurred with many of the above findings.
However the government has insisted that the mass graves found in the region all belong to foreign militants.
In 2011, a Human Rights group confirmed that there are thousands of bullet-ridden bodies buried in unmarked graves across the region. 574 bodies were identified as missing locals in a just a small part of the region. This figure indicates that claims of thousands of killed, or “disappeared” locals are accurate.
In 2012, human rights lawyer Parvez Imroz commenced the first statewide study of torture in the region, his study sample comprising 50 villages, a reasonable number in order to make sensible conclusions. More than 2,000 extreme cases of torture were identified and documented. He discovered 50 “centers” run by state army and paramilitaries where torture is practised.
The latest crackdown by the government of this asian giant began in August 2019, when it took the highly controversial step of revoking the region’s long held autonomy and its self government. By the federal government annexing the region, it has essentially reverted it to the same status as the rest of the nation, with no special powers or authority of its own, ruled by the Capital.
This annexation was always going to be highly controversial. To ensure compliance with it, as many as 600,000 government troops have been sent to the region to enforce order and quash dissent. Approximately 4 million people have been confined within their homes by the military, essentially under house arrest. A total internet, media and communication blackout put in place at the start of the annexation was only lifted in February 2021, after 18 months.
Life remains hard in the region in 2021, with hundreds of military checkpoints still in place, internet coverage patchy and slow, many phone systems still cut by the State government. The predictable winter power cuts – intentional or not – make life even more miserable. The combined economic effect on the population from all these measures has been dire while the coronavirus has only added to their misery.
Upon reading these reports one might think we are talking about the persecution of the Uighurs in the Chinese autonomous region of Xinjiang or about events in Hong Kong. And that these crimes have been committed at the hands of Beijing. But we are not and they have not.
These long standing human rights abuses all come from the previously autonomous Kasmir region in India. And the violent events all relate to the Indian government in Delhi. Successive Indian governments in fact.
But you would never know much about the troubles of this region in India as it gets only spasmodic coverage in the mainstream media and even then, only after the most undeniable atrocities by Delhi. The fuss is soon gone. Why is that?
There is hardly any space in the illustrious western media headlines anyway as every second line is taken up with negative coverage of anything to do with China – factual or otherwise.
The Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) was accorded special status by Article 370 of the Constitution of India after the former British colony was divided into Pakistan and India in 1947. In contrast to other states of India, Jammu and Kashmir had its own constitution, own flag and administrative autonomy and it was the only Indian state with a Muslim majority. Indian citizens from other states were not allowed to purchase land or property in Jammu and Kashmir.
India initially indicated in 1947 that it would allow Kashmir a referendum on whether Kashmiri citizens wanted to stay part of India, join Muslim Pakistan (as the majority of Kashmiris are not Hindu Indians but Muslims) or become independent. The referendum was never held and there has been troubles in the region ever since. India and Pakistan have fought three wars and there have been insurgencies within Kashmir as the locals try to change their status. Complicating things further, half of Kashmir is held by India and half by Pakistan, but both nations claim the entire region for themselves. Now India has changed the status quo by removing the Kasmir region’s autonomy and annexing it into India itself.
So how have western governments reacted to discoveries of ACTUAL mass graves in the former British colony of India, where thousands of ACTUAL dead people have been documented as missing and confirmed and identified as dead?
The British parliament has expressed many views since the troubles began, all rather vague sounding, non-blaming, even-handed irrelavancies, such as it expressing in 2012 its “sadness and “regret” over the discovery of more than 6,000 unmarked graves in Kashmir, India.
Sadness? Really ? That is all the British government can express? It is sad? Is this the same nation’s government that expresses total moral outrage at the so-called “genocide” against the Uighurs in Xinjiang by the Chinese government? A genocide that is not supported by any significant body of credible evidence nor by finds of mass graves nor dead bodies or anything much at all?
Is there persecution in China? Undoubtedly Yes. But Genocide? No.
Could it be that just like the mass graves of children in Canada – interestingly, another former British colony – the finding of real and genuine and documented dead bodies of men, women and children in India is just too much to bear for the former moral leader of the world?
The lack of outrage expressed by western governments at the atrocities in India and Canada are only made more sickening by their complete lack of objectivity and perspective in their comments about Xinjiang in China.
And once again, don’t look to any international mainstream media for guidance – they are completely in on the con.
What is the real agenda here ? It is pretty obvious and has been discussed in previous posts on Xinjiang. Check them out.
Thanks for reading.
Is Mr Blinken the Dumbest Yet? Or Maybe Just the Most Arrogant?
“American Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken demands China release Canadian Businessman Convicted of Spying”
Danny just heard the news about Mr Blinken’s demands….but this is all far from funny.
So, let us just get this straight. Sorry, this is going to be a long sentence….but here goes,
The Government of the United States, in Washington, is “demanding” that another nation’s government, China, release a convicted spy, who isn’t American but a citizen of a third nation, Canada, all whilst, Canada, had previously apprehended – on possibly dubious legal grounds – a highly prominent Chinese business lady who had broken no Canadian laws, but was apprehended simply because the United States asked Canada to do so, on the grounds that the Chinese business lady is alleged by the United States government to have undertaken normal business dealings – again, not involving America – and breaking no laws of Canada or China, with yet a fourth nation, Iran – who America doesn’t like – dealings through a Hong Kong bank, and where she wasn’t breaking any laws of Iran or Hong Kong either, and all whilst the American government is refusing to drop its charges against the citizen of a fifth (or is it sixth?) nation, Australia, who is also not American, and who is being held in solitary confinement conditions commonly described as torture, by a sixth (or seventh) nation, Britain, for reasons most people would classify as bogus due to the captive being a genuine whistleblower and therefore protected by legal rights?
Phew – that took some effort.
It is beyond the ability of language to describe these events. Which is actually the subject of another post coming shortly.
In the meantime, all we can do is to share these arrogant atrocities carried out in the name of democracy and freedom, with as many people as we can to highlight the events transpiring out of a dieing empire’s struggle to see itself, and its own horrors, in the mirror.
We can only hope and pray that this dieing empire – America – doesn’t take us all with it.
Dr Fauci’s Wuhan Virus Lab Funding
In June 2021 the Chinese government publicly commented that Washington had better tread “very carefully” when discussing the origins of the Covid 19 virus. It was the sort of statement that immediately got my attention for it seemed to be presented in the type of code language governments use when they want to send out an unmistakeable message, without drawing too much attention to it. And indeed, like most major global news stories, there is an invisible back story of some sort behind Covid 19.
WSJ | Anthony Fauci and the Wuhan Lab : Emails Add to the Mystery of US funds for Risky Research
June 3, 2021
The Wuhan lab complex includes a Biosecurity Level 4 facility (BSL 4) completed in 2018 to handle highly dangerous viruses. The BSL 4 lab was designed and completed in conjunction with the expertise and funding of many western nations. It is not a unique facility or a secret one, but it is the only such lab in China. The United States currently has four BSL 4 type labs and is building four more.
“Gain of function” is when virus structures are artificially manipulated in a lab in order to make them much more deadly to humans. US government officials have known all along that these “Gain of Function” experiments were being conducted at the BSL 4 facility in Wuhan, including, it seems, Dr Anthony Fauci.
According to US Senator Rand Paul, Dr Fauci has not been totally honest about his knowledge of gain of function virus research in Wuhan,
“Dr. Fauci started saying early on, (that they have looked to see if this came from animals naturally) but when he did realize …. on January 31 (this might be contradicted) he gets very urgent messages from four scientists saying that it looks like this virus was manipulated in the lab. He also has a paper (Ed:see below) that he sends to his assistant that is a gain of function paper that NIH funded…. and (they are) alarmed that it didn’t go through any kind of process or screening that it was supposed to be going through …. they were alarmed that they would be associated with this,” said Paul.
They organized…..a letter. And their private emails are saying, ‘hey, you don’t sign it, you don’t sign it, because ….we want it to appear as if it’s an independent effort that we had nothing to do with.’
Senator Paul added, “They’ve also taken COVID-19 and tried to infect bats. And they found that it doesn’t infect bats very well, it seems to be most adapted to infect humans.”
Clearly, Dr Fauci and his staff were at least aware of, possibly involved with and funding, and potentially even covering up activities surrounding gain of function virus research in Wuhan. Who else in the US government might have known given that lower level State Deprtment officials were told to keep off this subject.
Back in 2018, the year the Wuhan BSL 4 lab first opened, US State Dept officials visited the facility and were concerned about what they saw going on. They reported their concerns back to senior US State Department Officials. Nothing happened. The officials were told to leave that Pandora’s box alone.
So, it seems quite possible then that the Covid virus could have come from the Wuhan BSL 4 lab, and have been artificially created. But who was involved in or responsible for the research? Does it necessarily mean that the Chinese government is solely responsible just because any hypothetical leak came from their lab? What role did Dr Fauci and his US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease play? Were they directly funding the specific Gain of Function research at Wuhan? Why were they dealing with this new BSL 4 lab in China, when the United States has four similar labs of its own? Who else in the US government knew what was going on given that officials were being told not to open a can of worms?
Dr Fauci was funding the Wuhan lab, but he claims it was not for gain of function research. However, in a somewhat unusual move, Dr Fauci was not sending the US government funds directly to Wuhan, but channeled them through a third party, non-profit New York based organization, The EcoHealth Alliance. Why would he do that?
There may be an innocent explanation for that, but we know why people often use third party tax havens too. To keep things hidden.
The Chinese government has previously singled out the US Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Maryland for attention, another high level BSL 4 lab. There has been serious lapses in safety at this US facility….so serious in fact, that it was reported in August, 2019 that this lab was shut down by the CDC authorities, just a few months before we hear of Covid 19 for the first time.
Is there a connection between shutting this US lab and Covid 19?
US CDC Shuts Down Army Lab’s Disease Research
“The agency (CDC) cites lapses in biosafety procedures at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Maryland.”
So, it was in this environment of safety concerns at BSL 4 labs in both China and the USA, that Dr. Fauci stated publicly several times that Covid 19 was highly likely to be a natural virus that had jumped to humans, and did not originate from a lab.
It would be nice to see some of his evidence to support this claim, given accidents with viruses do happen. Given that the American military’s BSL 4 lab in Maryland had only recently been shut down in 2019 for serious bio-safety breaches. Was the seriousness of the Covid 19 outbreak in the United States solely due to incompetance?
All of the above is purely circumstantial evidence and as it is, doesn’t prove or disprove anything. But it does seem that, as is always the case, some people know much more than we will ever know, and about things that we don’t have a clue even exist.
Which is why we need to get to the bottom of the whole Covid-19 saga – a political football and health saga that has been a mystical and often contradictory series of flip-flops and dramas since it first alighted onto the world stage in 2019. It has been hyped and sensationalized by the media since day one and may indeed have changed the way the world lives forever – and not for the better.
Dozens of questions have arisen and few are ever seriously addressed let alone answered. Why was Sweden so viciously targeted for not following global recomendations on Covid 19? And will it matter ?
What are we only now finding out about? How much more is there that we never will?
Once again we can expect no help at all from the mainstream media in answering questions.
Taiwan Claims the South China Sea :o)
We all know that China makes some pretty big claims to territory in the South China Sea… claims that even I think seem a bit exaggerated, but then I don’t know any of the history behind it all.
You know, there’s China’s huge “nine dash line” and all that, which extends far south of their actual mainland areas and islands.
So China claims a heck of alot of the sea as we’re always told in our media. Fair enough.
But do you know about the claims of the other Asian countries to the same parts of that sea?
I didn’t. Other than that there were overlapping claims. Maybe because the media never mentions those competing claims.
Vietnam, a country only a fraction of the size and population of China claims well over half the area that China does! That’s it in the solid white line below,
And most absurd of all – and never mentioned – are the claims of the tiny province of Taiwan. Taiwan is tiny even compared to Vietnam, therefore is miniscule compared to mainland China. Taiwan is not even a country!
Yet Taiwan’s claim (the green island at the top of the map below) to the south China Sea IS ALMOST IDENTICAL TO THAT OF CHINA!! Their claim is represented by white dashed line below. China’s claim is the red shaded area – the two claims being almost identical.
And Vietnam’s claim extends well past halfway across to The Philippines and Malaysia. (the white solid line)
In fact, only Malaysia seems to be making anything like a sensible claim.
Brunei, just a dot of a country is just annoying by claiming anything at all.
It really does seem like everywhere you read these days, someone, somewhere is trying to make China look greedy or aggressive, either by straight out lies, lies of ommission or by exaggerations and half truths.
Let the reader beware!
(except for when you are at The Font blog. I wouldn’t do any of those things :o)
Palestine and Xinjiang : One and the Same Thing
In the short comments above, acclaimed film maker and journalist John Pilger outlines why the issues underlying the slow, inexorable genocide of the Palestinian people and the issues underlying fabricated genocide in Xinjiang, China are one and the same thing.
They are both about a fading empire desparately trying to maintain their control over others.
The Palestinians have been sold out so many times by their regional cousins and by western powers and they have few resources to call on – mainly, the moral highground and the flimsical hope that a majority of westerners will one day understand the historical processes at work during the creation of Israel. And how and why Israel and the land it is made from, Palestine, are what they are.
When any reasonable person truly understands these process, I believe they will support the Palestinian people and their right to their own land. The global processes which have led to such great injustice in Palestine are the same processes that are playing out today in Xinjiang. However, in Palestine, the processes of western propaganda and their wars have been active for 70 years and the victim is weak and without much support.
The propaganda against China, and Xinjiang in particular is fairly new and the victim is becoming increasingly powerful.
It is not for nothing that China has gone, in a few short years since 2015 from this…
President Xi Jingping was treated to a full scale British state visit, complete with trips to the pub and selfies with his good mate UK PM David Cameron, as well as grand accomodation and state dinners with Queen Elizabeth. They were heady days back in 2015.
But those days are long gone and now we have these, pretty much all at the same time. Coincidence? Or is it because the west woke up the amazing opportunities that China can offer the world, if left alone?
These issues in China are not new, but they have certainly all been highly inflamed since 2015. Why is that ?
Because the United States in particular sees China’s new role in the world with fear and envy. President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) will transform the world for the better in my opinion. America now realizes this and they know that the bulk of the poorer countries in the world that have been bypassed for decade after decade by the major western powers will ask, “why didn’t you help us like China is today when you had the chance?”
The only answer to that is not flattering to the centuries of western led colonialism and domination that extracted the resources from its subject nations, but did little to improve the basic infrastructures of life to help the local people. China is doing that today with the BRI.
At any rate, America has done little to update its own infrastructure, instead choosing to give its money to financial elites and spending it on endess wars. So infrastructure building anywhere is not America’s strongpoint anymore.
John Pilger has also correctly stated that if you can fully understand the issue of Palestine, since the 19th century until today, and how Israel was created from it, then you will understand every issue around the globe. I used to be fooled by western propaganda until I started to do my own research and thinking. That is when I understood what Israel represents and how it came into being. And the role played by the UK and USA in creating a nation upon another people’s land.
And now I can see, as John Pilger said, how these same processes play out around the world every day.
It should be becoming increasingly obvious that the “leadership” of the USA, if it ever really existed, is coming to an end and not before time.
The only question is – will they go quietly or will they take much of the world down with them?
WHAT ARE HUMAN RIGHTS? THERE ARE 30 OF THEM!!
Western countries talk alot about “human rights”. It has become the “go to” subject, when western leaders are in front of the cameras. We hear western Presidents and Prime Ministers talking about “freedom” and “democracy” and how everyone must have these. That is sort of true, in a limited way, but the sad state of American democracy doesn’t exactly fill oneself with the joys of that system, and the urges to copy it.
At any rate, there is FAR more to the human rights story than the sole concept of democracy and its equally impossible to define concept, freedom. But you will only hear western leaders talk about freedom and democracy because they want you to think that democracy is simply about having an election. Which is nonsense. That is what you tell children.
Elections can be unfairly influenced and rigged by a raft of forces within society, which, shockingly, are often totally transparent. People sort of know this on some level – that is why so many people have abandoned the electoral process in America – or they voted for Donald Trump. As Trump said in the 2016 campaign, “what have you got to lose by voting for me?”…. simultaneously one of the saddest, most cynical and most highly effective electoral stratedgies ever.
The point is – there are 30 separate articles to internationally declared human rights and an expert comparison between say, America and China, on ALL 30 would be an interesting excercise. But we’re not doing that here.
In 1948 the United Nations issued the Universal Declaration of Human RIghts, made up of 30 individual rights set as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations to work towards. It set out and described, for the first time, fundamental rights.

Article 30 – Rights of Others Must Not be Destroyed
Nothing in this Declaration may be interpreted as implying for any State, group or person any right to engage in any activity or to perform any act aimed at the destruction of any of the rights and freedoms set forth herein.
You will notice that “election of government” constitutes just 1 of the 30 human rights, Article 21. Article 21 states that the authority of government comes from “the will of the people” and that elections shall be by universal and equal sufferage, meaning everybody is equally eligible to vote. One person, one vote.
By this measure, the United States did not become a democracy as recognised by the UN until 1965, 189 years after its declaration of independence and 18 years after this declaration of human rights. It can be argued that due to ongoing election irregularities such as rigged voting district boundaries, the disenfranchisement of millions of former prisoners convicted of even minor crimes and the reduced and difficult placement of voting booths in poorer areas, that America has still not achieved full compliance with this human right. Low voter turnout is another feature of American democracy which suggests this is true.
Most people would say that China is a one party state with no real democracy. That is probably true. China might not have a system like the USA or UK for example, but is the authority of the Chinese government based upon “the will of the people” as required by the UN Human Rights standard? Due to very low voter turnout, and the irregularities already mentioned, are the results of American City, Congressional and Presidential elections, “the will of the people?”. America’s election results are certainly “the will of the system”, but that is hardly the same thing.
Having visited China and travelled far away from tourist areas I believe the authority of the chinese government DOES come from the will of the majority of the people. I was amazed at how “free” I felt there. Before I left NZ, I had images of goose-stepping soldiers everywhere and red squad commandos around every corner. In fact, I wandered around by myself quite alot, in places big and small, city and countryside and never once felt threatened, spied upon, unsafe or controlled in any way. In other words, I felt very “free” and safe – in a country run by an authoritarian government. Maybe it was because it was run by an authoritarian government.
The achievements of China’s government mostly go unreported in western media whether they be technical or social. Even the technical advances are usually portrayed in a negative or threatening light. I didn’t realise that China invented 5G and has already been working on 6G for some time. No doubt we will hear the chorouses of “China Stole our 6G” from westerners, even though they have no idea what it even is.
I guess rapid advances like these are only natural in a country that graduates 1 million scientists and engineers every year. The Chinese don’t really care so much about creating new Lawyers and Economists as the west proliferates.
So let’s look at some of the other UN Human Rights that every country is supposedly working towards, like Article 25 – The Right to an Adequate Standard of Living.
It is universally agreed that what the Chinese government has achieved in recent decades constitutes the greatest improvement in their people’s social and financial living conditions, possibly in all history. That is, China has advanced human rights in their country in a hugely significant way.
These achievements gets little or no credit in the west, just fleeting references which pass by the attention of the average westerner – just as they are designed to do.
Citizens in the west, particularly the United States are experiencing an ever growing inequality that results in ever growing poverty and the dissolving of the middle classes – the entirely opposite process that is occuring in China. Babies born today in China – still a developing country – will outlive babies born in America – one of the richest countries in history. How is this possible ? Something is wrong somewhere right?
Article 26 – the Right to Education.
Again I think China outperforms the United States here. Teachers in Florida now have the legal right to carry guns to school. Mass shootings amongst young Americans are tragically common. There are more black 17 year old men in America’s prisons than in their high schools. Undoubtedly, these forgotton Americans are also the ones who have abandoned the electoral process or been forced out of it due to convictions for minor crime. Human Rights ?
Article 28 says that everyone is entitled to a safe and stable international order wherein all the human rights listed in this declaration can be realized.
I don’t think there is much argument which nation has been them most disruptive to the peace and stability of the world, certainly in these past decades, and maybe even for centuries before that. The United States of America.
Human rights and a semblance of stability that tens, perhaps hundreds of millions of citizens of the Middle East and of Central and South America had paid a great price to achieve under their imperfect governments this last century have been brutally ripped from their hands by constant American led war mongering and interference in their internal affairs. This angle of the international story of Human Rights is never told in the self described “propaganda media” of CNN and their crony friends.
There are too many articles of human rights to go into here and I’m not an expert at any rate. But what should become very clear very quickly, is that the subject of “Human Rights” is a complex and wide ranging one. A topic much too complex to be glibly passed over by 5 second media sound bites and provocative, misleading and frequently false headlines. Lieing about others to promote your own interests can only get you so far.
The most significant struggle happening today is between the competing messages of the American led West and that of China. Messages are words and words can be lies.
In the end, the outcome of this struggle, whatever that will be, will not be determined by words but by actions and outcomes. Outcomes as they affect ordinary people. No amount of propaganda from whatever source, Beijing or Washington, can change the outcomes of ordinary people’s lives. Only actions can do that.
I don’t know which outcome will be dominant in the coming decades, but judging by past outcomes, I think I have a pretty good idea.
Uyghur Extremists Promise Blood in Xinjiang
Uighur ISIS fighters vow blood will ‘flow in rivers’ in China !REUTERS NEWS

BEIJING (Reuters) – Vowing to plant their flag in China and that blood will “flow in rivers”, a video released this week purportedly by the Islamic State group shows ethnic Uighur fighters training in Iraq, underscoring what Beijing sees as a serious threat.
China is worried that Uighurs, a mostly Muslim people from western China’s Xinjiang region, have gone to Syria and Iraq to fight for militant groups there, having traveled illegally via Southeast Asia and Turkey.
Hundreds of people have been killed in Xinjiang in the past few years, most in unrest between Uighurs and ethnic majority Han Chinese. The government blames the unrest on Islamist militants.
The Iraqi arm of Islamic State has released a half-hour long video purportedly showing Uighurs training, as well as images from inside Xinjiang.
It seems when ISIS beheads and murders people in the west this is deemed sick and depraved and “the perpetrators will be bought to justice!”
But when it happens in China, the Chinese government is accused of genocide when it defends its people against the same terrorism.
Double standards maybe ?
A Tale of Two Massacres
Most of us know what happened in Tiananmen Square in 1989. The date is not missed each year around the world, which is only right and proper to remember the victims and the tragedy. Our media here mark the date with some “shocking new tale” of some sort.
However, probably no one in the west knows anything about another massacre, only 9 years earlier than Tiananmen Square, occuring in the same geographical region as Beijing.
In 1980, there was an uprising of again, mostly students and young people in the South Korean city of Gwangju. The uprising and protests occured for much the same reasons as the ones in Beijing, and had much the same outcome – an horrific civilian death toll caused by the Korean military government’s taming of the protests. It was a massacre – the Gwangu (sometimes Kwangju) massacre – and hundreds or thousands were killed by South Korean government troops. Just as happened in Beijing.
So the obvious question is, why are the two very similar massacres treated so differently around the world and in the global media? I just found out today that even my home city has a rock with a plaque on it marking the Beijing deaths – which I didn’t know.
I’m sure we don’t have a rock marking the equally tragic Kwangju massacre deaths as the date, May 18, is never mentioned at all.
Could the total media absence of any mention or knowledge of the Korean Kwangju massacre possibly be related to the fact that, unlike in China, the Korean military government was aided and abetted by and carried out the massacre with the full prior knowledge of, the American government?
Watch the Terrorism in Xinjiang
He was a leader in the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) when Interviewed
Omer Kanat was interviewed the by The Grayzone’s Max Blumenthal (right) in 2019. Mr Kanant was asked how he knew that 1 million Uyghurs were being held in camps in Xinjiang. He answered, that his organization, the WUC, got their information from the western media.
This is a startling admission, as Mr Kanat and the various Uyghur organizations he has been a leader in (the WUC, Radio Free Asia, Uyghur Human Rights Defenders) have been quoted in the western media AT GREAT LENGTH, as THEM being the sources of the media’s stories. But Mr Kanat is saying they don’t know, they just read a newspaper.
Huh? Which is it? They can’t both be true.
Does anyone actually know anything about Uyghurs in camps?
By the way, all of the organizations listed above that Mr Omer Kanat worked for are partially funded by the American government.
The interview with Omer Kanat is part of some excellent investigative journalism found in this link,
Genocide is the Wrong Word to describe the Uyghurs in Xinjiang.
From the fairly conservative British magazine, The Economist;
To confront evil, the first step is to describe it accurately.
Bear this in mind when deciding what to call China’s persecution of the Uyghurs. On his last day in office, Trump’s secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, called it “genocide”. Joe Biden’s administration has repeated it (see article) and lawmakers in Britain are mulling it (see article). But is it accurate?
By the common understanding of the word, it is not. Just as “homicide” means killing a person and “suicide” means killing yourself, “genocide” means killing a people. China’s persecution of the Uyghurs is horrific: but it is NOT genocide.
These men are in a camp of some sort in Xinjiang, probably against their will, but this is NOT genocide.
